A lecture by Prof Fiona Ritchie
RThe eighteenth century saw Shakespeare rise to become not just the most important English dramatist but also a crucial cultural figure. This talk will explore how Shakespeareâs reputation was established both on the page (in editions of and commentaries on his works, as well as imaginative responses to them) and on the stage (as his plays were frequently performed in the theatre, although not often in precisely the way in which he wrote them!).
