Did the Magic work? Occult practices and sport

While the Olympic fever is still high Chris Roberts will talk about sports and magical influences

From pre-tournament rituals involving food and clothing to burying animals under an opponent’s pitch, sport is rife with magical practices of all sorts. This talk will examine beliefs relating to numbers and colours as well as players’ superstitions, right up to what JK Rowling might refer to as the dark arts of ground cursing and juju. Whilst concentrating on football, Chris will look at how the more magically minded fared in the 2012 London Olympics --and why Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo may have a brain similar to a feral pigeon. Chris Roberts is a writer and co presenter of Resonance FM’s Café Calcio on the cultural and artistic aspects of football. His book Football Voodoo explores the rituals, superstitions and occult ceremonies that occur around the game both at home and abroad.
