ICA Quickfire Talk: Thomas Houseago

ICA Quickfire Talk: Thomas Houseago

Join Thomas Houseago for a conversation with Michael Stanley at the ICA. Thomas Houseago is a British sculptor working with various media: plaster, wood, bronze and many more. His provocative sculpture is reportedly influenced by works of Pablo Picasso, Eduardo Paolozzi and Henry Moore. According to critics, his expressive technique evokes associations with topics of sex, violence and human physiology.

Houseago, born in Leeds in 1972 and educated at London’s Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design, is now based in Los Angeles, collaborating with Aaron Curry. Before moving to LA he lived and worked in London, Amsterdam and in Belgium.

Houseago solo exhibitions were held at Hauser and Wirth, London, in 2012, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich, in 2011, Modern Art Oxford in 2010, Galleria Zero, Milan, in 2009, David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles, in 2008, The Modern Institute, Glasgow, in 2007 and many more. His works were also shown as part of We Will Live, We Will See at Zabludowicz Collection (2011), The World Belongs To You at Palazzo Grassi, Venice (2011), The Artist’s Museum at MOCA, Los Angeles (2010), I giovani che visitano le nostre rovine non vi vedono che uno stile at Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Turin (2009), Strange Events permit themselves the Luxury of Occurring at Camden Arts Centre, London (2007).

Thomas Houseago’s most recent works are currently exhibited at Hauser & Wirth Outdoor Sculpture Space in Southwood Garden.

Michael Stanley is the Director of Modern Art Oxford – one of the country’s leading venues for the presentation of international contemporary art. Responsible for many innovative curatorial projects and exhibitions, Stanley has previously worked as Director of Milton Keynes Gallery and as a Curator at Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery.
