A conversation on âCreative Anatomyâ between Michael Farthing, Professor of Medicine and Vice Chancellor of the University of Sussex and his brother, Stephen Farthing RA, artist and Professor of Drawing at the University of the Arts, chaired by Desmond Shawe-Taylor, Surveyor of The Queen's Pictures.
The Farthings will discuss the science and imagery behind Leonardoâs researches into the human form, and reveal where and why he âmade an anatomy to see the cause of a death so sweetâ.
They will talk about skulls and architectural domes and move between the metrics of proportion and Leonardoâs engagement with the microcosm or âlesser worldâ. They will debate with their audience whether his anatomical drawings are the earliest expression of the meeting of science and art, fusing observations from life with marks on paper.
