David Constantine on 20 years' work supporting people with mobility disabilities as Co-Founder and Executive Officer of international development charity Motivation.
David Constantine MBE talks about 20 years' work supporting people with mobility disabilities as Co-Founder and Executive Officer of international development charity Motivation. Join David, interviewed by BBC presenter Martine Croxall, as he tells a remarkable and very personal journey of self-discovery and determination.
In 1982, aged 21, David took his camera and surfboard and headed to Australia, hoping for scenery, sunshine and the adventure of a lifetime. His holiday ended, and life as he knew it changed forever, following a mis-judged dive on Fraser Island. David broke his neck and faced life as a quadriplegic.
The desire to be creative led David from a degree in computer science through a brief stint at IBM to product design at the Royal College of Art. A competition to design a wheelchair for use in developing countries followed, implementing the winning product in Bangladesh.
His determination to change lives led David to co-found Motivation in 1991, a charity whose award-winning products and training programmes have reached over 135,000 people in 90 countries, giving disabled people independence, confidence and hope for the future.
David is an accomplished photographer and has travelled extensively. Collections of his photographs can be found at www.sittingimages.com and www.vwworldseries.com. David featured in the Independent on Sundayâs Happy List 2011 â“ 100 people who make Britain a better place to live.
Discover more about David's work, what inspired him to help others and his plans for the future. This promises to be an fascinating evening not to be missed!
