US leadership in the 21st Century

LSE public lecture

The United States economy remains the worlds' largest. Demographic change is seeing Texas and other states increase their number of congressional seats and share of the US economy. Mayor Castro's SA 2020 programme details his vision for San Antonio. How does one of the US' young leaders see its place in the world?

Julian Castro is the Mayor of San Antonio, the US' 7th largest city, one of the fastest growing cities in the country. He is a co-chair of the Obama 2012 Campaign and gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.

In March 2010, Mayor Castro joined executives from Google and Twitter in being named to the World Economic Forum’s list of Young Global Leaders. In 2005, Castro founded The Law Offices of Julián Castro, PLLC, a civil litigation practice. He has served on the board of Family Services Association, the Clear Channel San Antonio Advisory Board and the San Antonio National Bank Advisory Board. In addition to his community service, Mayor Castro has taught courses at The University of Texas at San Antonio, Trinity University, and St. Mary’s University.

Mayor Castro earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University with honors and distinction in 1996 and a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School in 2000. Mayor Castro’s brother, Joaquin, serves in the Texas House of Representatives.
