HINDUSTANI MUSIC (NORTH INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC) History, Theory and Practice

This is designed as a general interest course for those who would like more background on North Indian music. It will not only be particularly useful for those studying music and/or Kathak dance but also for those who enjoy classical music and dance are curious about its history.


History, Theory and Practice
A series of ten informal and interactive sessions of two hours each

Lecturer: Dr. Jameela Siddiqi
Dates: November 2012- January 2013
Timings: Tuesday evenings 6.45pm- 8.45pm
Fees: £150 for complete course; £20 individual sessions. (£100 for Bhavan’s students)

The course is not intended to run as a linear political or social history of India. Social and political events are discussed only where they have a significant impact on musical culture and development.

Objectives:
• To encourage critical thinking and analysis
• To foster an active interest in the theory and historical background of the performing arts – music and dance
• To encourage discussion and debate
• To provide useful theoretical and supplementary material for pupils of Indian music
• To make musicians (and music enthusiasts) aware of a great cultural heritage
• To create a space where basic questions concerning Indian music can be addressed
