Dean's Seminar - Rape in War and Peace: Rethinking Sexual Violence and Postwar Justice

Lecture by Dr Jelke Boesten, Senior Lecturer, Social Development and Human Security, Centre for Global Development, University of Leeds and former Visiting Fellow, Human Rights Consortium, School of Advanced Study

The idea that rape may serve strategic purposes in war is now widely accepted by the international community, and has helped put sexual violence on the agenda of the global peace-building and transitional justice agenda. But wartime rape is only a strategic possibility because of its peacetime meanings. Using the Peruvian case as an example, this presentation explores the links between war and peacetime sexual violence by examining meanings of sexual violence during the war between Shining Path and the armed forces, and those embedded in post-war justice processes.
