The first woman to be elected to membership of the Royal Academy (in 1936), during her long career Laura Knight developed a vibrant, lively response to the challenges of Impressionism and plein air painting in works whose direct charm remains fresh today. She also, though, painted the circus and the ballet, the seedy glamour of backstage dressing-rooms and the new situations offered to women by wartime life on the Home Front.
