Stephanie Jones and Marianne O'Doherty, Lecturers in English at the University of Southampton, explore literary ways of seeing the sea.
Stephanie Jones and Marianne O'Doherty, Lecturers in English at the University of Southampton, explore literary ways of seeing the sea. In Southampton we have become used to viewing the sea from a pragmatic perspective; it is a route of transit for goods, a source of employment and prosperity, but at the same time a threat, able to take the lives of sailors and passengers. This event will explore other ways of seeing the sea. We will look at how Europeans have figured oceans - specifically the faraway seascape of the Indian Ocean - as a site of dreams and nightmares, desires and menace, of freedom and imprisonment. O'Doherty will take us back to medieval tales of island paradises and abodes of monsters, while Jones will continue the narrative through stories of modern arcadias and pirate utopias.
