Paul Martineau gives a talk about the 20th century American photographer and Modernist pioneer, Paul Outerbridge.
Continuing our season on photography, in conjunction with Juergen Teller: Woo!, Paul Martineau gives a talk about the 20th century American photographer Paul Outerbridge (1896-1958). A pioneer in the application of Modernist aesthetic principles to commercial photography and famed for his mastery of early colour printing, Outerbridge produced some of the most innovative and influential pictures in the history of photography.
Martineau's talk presents us with a survey of Outerbridge's career and explores the photographer's struggle to unite his artistic and commercial work during a time of significant change in the world of art and high-end advertising.
Paul Martineau is an Associate Curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
