The period of Samuel Pepys’ Diary, 1660 to 1669, is one of the most dramatic in London’s life: the restoration of the monarchy, the Plague, the Fire, the return of the new age of theatre as well as the development of new scientific ideas. The Diary is a unique record of the time by one man’s intimate
reaction to these great events and also the candid and detailed account of his own personal life of domesticity and everyday occasions.
On this WALK, you will see Inigo Jones’ grand hall with its Rubens ceiling remains the prime display of the Stuart monarchy. Outside was the newly-planned St James’ Park. Here Pepys experienced the glamour of the monarch’s presence and the company of his executive colleagues in London’s version of Versailles.
