THE LONDON COURSE /SAMUEL PEPYS – GUY’S THEATRE, GUY’S HOSPITAL AND SOUTHWARK

The period of Samuel Pepys’ Diary, 1660 to 1669, is one of the most dramatic in London’s life: the restoration of the monarchy, the Plague, the Fire, the return of the new age of theatre as well as the development of new scientific ideas. The Diary is a unique record of the time by one man’s intimate reaction to these great events and also the candid and detailed account of his own personal life of domesticity and everyday occasions.

In this walk, you will see how The Old Operating Theatre is a remarkable survival of the days before anaesthesia when surgery was a crude experience. This former adjunct to the original St Thomas’ Hospital will be your prime visit, with its in-house museum of medical practices. Hospitals developed their first modern touch in the early 18th century when the building of the nearby Guy’s Hospital became a key architectural legacy.
