The Canterbury Tales are a splendid evocation of life in medieval London. They epitomise the age of pilgrimage and the influence of medieval church life. Chaucer was a vintage Londoner living from about 1345 to his death in 1400. This course will focus on his poems and fourteenth century London life.
Chaucer was an important civil servant and knew London intimately. This lecture will appraise the historical nature of London: the palace and abbey of Westminster, and the vibrant City of the Lord Mayor, craftsmen and traders, the guilds and the apprentices, merchants and clerics. It will reveal an environment of timber houses and stone public buildings, where pigs and chickens lived side by side with the men of power.
