The Canterbury Tales are a splendid evocation of life in medieval London. They epitomise the age of pilgrimage and the influence of medieval church life. Chaucer was a vintage Londoner living from about 1345 to his death in 1400. This course will focus on his poems and fourteenth century London life.
The poems will be our subject bringing together the diverse Canterbury pilgrims. They are rich in medieval philosophy and life and are a splendid social record. The Pardoner, the Nun and the Knight will be seen in the context of medieval life.
