The Canterbury Tales are a splendid evocation of life in medieval London. They epitomise the age of pilgrimage and the influence of medieval church life. Chaucer was a vintage Londoner living from about 1345 to his death in 1400. This course will focus on his poems and fourteenth century London life.
Immediately outside the city wall, three original monasteries survive. We will first visit St Bartholomewâs Priory, a pilgrim centre, whose surviving structure goes back to 1160 and itself was the inspiration for a hospital of healing. We will then see the exterior of the Charterhouse, the home of Carthusian monks: and from there we will visit the Priory of St John, the national centre of the Knights Hospitallers serving the crusaders on the island of Rhodes.
