The Canterbury Tales are a splendid evocation of life in medieval London. They epitomise the age of pilgrimage and the influence of medieval church life. Chaucer was a vintage Londoner living from about 1345 to his death in 1400. This course will focus on his poems and fourteenth century London life.
Since 1970 Museum of London Archaeology has excavated over 400 sites in the City. This lecture will illustrate profusely the superb discoveries of the buildings and artefacts ranging from the medieval waterfront to domestic buildings and churches, to the thousands of Londoners found in the Spitalfields cemetery and the Black Death victims outside the Old Mint.
