New Parliaments, New Politics?

New Parliaments, New Politics? Language and Gender in the Devolved Political Institutions of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

It was claimed that the devolved institutions of the UK would offer women an ‘unprecedented voice and place’, giving them greater opportunities for representation and participation in the Northern Ireland Assembly, the Scottish Parliament and the National Assembly for Wales. Drawing on ethnographic observations and interviews with politicians, and discourse analytic data from the close analysis of the debate ‘floor’ in each institution, I suggest some of the ways in which the analysis of linguistic participation can illuminate discussions about the substantive representation of women in these parliamentary institutions.
