During the final weekend of the Reading Room display The Independent Group: Parallel of Art & Life
Sixty years ago â“ as artists, architects, designers and theorists met at the ICA as part of the Independent Group to debate the forces changing contemporary culture â“ ideas around mechanisation, modernisation and entropy led to a compelling aesthetic, defined as much by the gleaming new celebrity culture of Hollywood as the bombed out landscape of post-war London, most notably seen in the exhibition This is Tomorrow at the Whitechapel in 1956. For JG Ballard, the Independent Group's interactions with the clean modernism of Le Corbusier, combined with the messiness of New Brutalism, helped shape his ideas and sensibility towards the London of his fiction. This discussion offers an insight to the links between the work of the Independent Group and Ballard, and brings together Professor Murray Fraser (Bartlett School of Architecture), Joanne Murray (Birkbeck) and Beth Williamson (Tate Research Fellow), chaired by Victoria Walsh (RCA).
This talk is followed by the launch of the Firstsite publication Nigel Henderson & Eduardo Paolozzi Hammer Prints Ltd, 1945 â“ 75, from 6pm - 8pm.
