Deborah Lavin & Bryan Niblett present a biographical picture of Charles Bradlaugh - radical and the first atheist Member of Parliament
Bradlaugh: Rationalist and Freethinker
Bradlaughâs political radicalism, his fight to take his parliamentary seat and his prosecution alongside Annie Besant for having published a birth control pamphlet now generally get more prominence than the importance Bradlaugh placed on atheism. This talk aims to address that imbalance.
Charles Bradlaughâs and Secular-Radicalismâs Response to the Irish Question.
British radicalism was forged in religious dissent but by the late 18th century it was largely secular. Mid Victorian Britainâs most prominent radical was Charles Bradlaugh and his National Secular Society was its biggest organisation, but by 1880 the most contentious social issue in Britain was the Irish Question and the most militant communities in Britain were Irish and Catholic.
