The American histories behind Chicago's Live The Spirit Big Band's latest compositions are contrasted by African British histories
Friday 25 October. 5-7pm. From Martin Luther King To Paul Stephenson in 1963. From Race Riots In Chicago To Cardiff in 1919. How Far Have We Come?
On the eve of the UK premiere of Live The Spirit Big Bandâs âA Deferred Dream Or A Dream Come True?â and â1919â, the leader of the Chicago jazz band, Ernest Dawkins, will make a presentation on the historical background to the compositions. Dawkins will show how examining the legacy of Martin Luther Kingâs âI Have A Dreamâ speech, famously delivered at the 1963 March On Washington For Jobs And Freedom, inspired the âA Deferred Dream Or A Dream Come True?â composition, and also give the background to the history of the Chicago race riots of 1919, which inspired â1919â. History consultant Kwaku will contrast this with a presentation on the British experience, by covering the Paul Stephenson-led Bristol Bus Boycott and its legacy, and highlighting the Cardiff race riots, one of the many race riots across British cities in 1919. This will be followed by a Q&A session.
