Discussion regarding careers in Islamic finance
There has been no shortage of articles written about how Islamic finance is growing at a galloping pace, with its estimated 15% to 20% annual growth rate considerably outstripping that seen in the conventional banking industry. Global Islamic assets held by commercial banks stood at $1.3bn in 2011, but the industryâs forecast growth of some 40% over two years will see this figure rise to $1.8bn in 2013, according to research by Ernst & Young. With Islamic finance growing so quickly there are many opportunities for individuals to find careers in the industry, yet many donât know how to enter the industry and/or what the working environment will be like.
The Islamic Finance and Ethics Society at SOAS will be hosting Sheikh Bilal Khan and Sheikh Badrul Hasan, both are Co-Chairman at Dome Advisory, to provide insight and guidance about how one can handle themselves in the industry.
Sheikh Bilal is Co-Chairman at Dome Advisory and is both a Shariah Scholar and an Islamic Finance and Takaful lawyer. He has almost two decades of Shariah law experience. He specialises in structuring and drafting Shariah-compliant products in the medium of Arabic, English and Urdu and enjoys unique and special relationships in the industry globally. He has lectured on the undergraduate law programme at the Leeds Metropolitan University as well as on the Arabic and Urdu programmes at the University of Leeds. Sheikh Bilal is currently co-authoring and editing two multi-volume legal treatises: Legal Practitionersâ Guide to Sukuk and Legal Practitionersâ Guide to Takaful and ReTakaful (Islamic Insurance and Reinsurance) as well as regularly contributing in industry journals and magazines and being quoted in the electronic and press media.
