Jamal Penjweny & Jonathan Watkins

A conversation between Jonathan Watkins, Ikon Director, and Iraqi artist Jamal Penjweny. This discussion is in advance of the opening of the first solo exhibition by Jamal Penjweny at Ikon, which will include photography and video works reflecting on life in Iraq today.

Join The Mosaic Rooms for a conversation between Jonathan Watkins, Ikon Director, and Iraqi artist Jamal Penjweny.
This talk is in advance of the opening at Ikon of the first solo exhibition by Jamal Penjweny, which will include photography and video works reflecting on life in Iraq today. Born in Sulaimaniya, Iraqi Kurdistan, in 1981, Penjweny started his artistic career as a sculptor and painter, moving into photography whilst supporting himself by working as a shepherd and, latterly, a café proprietor. His work has been the subject of international attention following its inclusion in Welcome to Iraq, the Iraqi pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale, curated by Jonathan Watkins. This is the opening exhibition of Ikon 50, the year-long programme celebrating Ikon’s 50th anniversary
Jonathan and Jamal will be in discussion about the artists work, including the photographic series Saddam is Here, and Jonathan will also reflect on the experiences of selecting the artists and curating the Iraqi pavilion last year. A Q&A session will follow.
In collaboration with Ikon Gallery and Gulan.
