Overview: The Role of Patronage and Collections
Samuel Johnson famously wrote: "Is not a Patron, my Lord, one who looks with unconcern on a man struggling for life in the water, and, when he has reached ground, encumbers him with help?" But what does it mean to be a patron and how has this notion altered through history? And what constitutes the ultimate collection?
