Covering 500 years, 38 patrons and several continents, this course is an examination of audacious acts of patronage and how they resulted in some of the finest art collections in the world.
Isabella d'Este (1474–1539) & Francesco II Gonzaga of Manuta (r. 1484–1519)
Coming from the sophisticated Este family, Isabella used her considerable income to patronise some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance including Coreggio, Da Pavia, Leonardo, Raphael, Perugino and Titian. She was also one of few women to create a studiolo. Her husband is better known for his military achievements but recent scholarship has re-examined his role in artistic patronage.
