Covering 500 years, 38 patrons and several continents, this course is an examination of audacious acts of patronage and how they resulted in some of the finest art collections in the world.
Rudolf II Habsburg, King of Hungary and Bohemia, Holy Roman Emperor (1583–1612)
Educated at the Habsburg court in Spain, Rudolf was called "the greatest art patron in the world" by a contemporary. His passion for the fantastical and his collection of medallions, coins, ivories, drawings, scientific objects, bronzes, and paintings led to a superb Kunstkammer and turned Prague into a "Parnassus of the arts."
