Covering 500 years, 38 patrons and several continents, this course is an examination of audacious acts of patronage and how they resulted in some of the finest art collections in the world.
Charles I of England (r. 1625â“1649)
The ill-fated Charles married Marie de Medicis' daughter, Henrietta Maria and they became patrons of Van Dyck and Orazio Gentileschi respectively. Charles amassed one of the finest royal art collections in Europe with works by Holbein, Rembrandt, Raphael, and Rubens.
