Covering 500 years, 38 patrons and several continents, this course is an examination of audacious acts of patronage and how they resulted in some of the finest art collections in the world.
Augustus II of Saxony and Poland (r. 1694–1733)
Fascinated by Oriental culture, Augustus II had a fondness for Chinese motifs. He built splendid palaces in Dresden, sought to emulate the decorations at the Wilanow Palace he coveted, and even imprisoned an alchemist – the latter leading to the establishment of the Meissen manufactory.
