Covering 500 years, 38 patrons and several continents, this course is an examination of audacious acts of patronage and how they resulted in some of the finest art collections in the world.
An accomplished cellist, Joseph II was known as the "Musical King". He was a ruler who encouraged Austrian high culture to adopt a more Germanic feel and presided over Vienna's cultural revival. He notably commissioned Mozart for years, supporting operas like Don Giovanni and Le Nozze de Figaro and democratising the art form.
