Treasures of the Court / Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov of Russia (b. 1750–d. 1831)

Covering 500 years, 38 patrons and several continents, this course is an examination of audacious acts of patronage and how they resulted in some of the finest art collections in the world.

Statesman, diplomat, art patron and connoisseur, the Prince was the director of the Hermitage and the Armoury Chamber. Buying his first books, drawings and paintings in the Netherlands, his travels led to artist studio visits. Soon he had amassed one of the most comprehensive collections of paintings as well as of snuff boxes, walking sticks, art from the Far East, tapestries, carved ivories, and gems, Netherlands
