Covering 500 years, 38 patrons and several continents, this course is an examination of audacious acts of patronage and how they resulted in some of the finest art collections in the world.
Ludwig I invested in art to make Munich ""an Athens on the Isar". Ludwig II's remarkable obsession with, and patronage of, Wagner led to the men exchanging some 600 letters. Wagner admitted, "Without him I am as nothing!" He also oversaw the construction of fairytale castles Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, and Herrenchiemsee.
