Treasures of the Court / King Christian VIII of Denmark (transition from monarchy to state) (r. 1839

Covering 500 years, 38 patrons and several continents, this course is an examination of audacious acts of patronage and how they resulted in some of the finest art collections in the world.

Christian VIII was extremely interested in culture and science so his reign saw the Court assume a pivotal role in Copenhagen's cultural life during the last decade of its Golden Age. His travels abroad resulted in him bringing home objects from ancient Greece and he retained a fascination for the works of Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.
