Inequality and farce in contemporary Britain

reflections from the Medieval Carnival and the biblical concept of shalom

JustShare revive their Christian Social & Political Thought lectures this July with a new talk exploring the biblical concept of shalom in contrast between contemporary British policies on socio-economic inequality and medieval festivals which imitated early Christian understandings of the Kingdom of God.

JustShare host speakers Andy and Carol Kingston-Smith on Tuesday the 8th July at St Mary-le-Bow Church on Cheapside. Andy and Carol are co-founders of the JusTice Initiative, which was founded in 2010 to facilitate and focus Christian engagement with justice related socio-political, economic and environmental issues. They are part-time lecturers in Justice and Mission at Redcliff College in Gloucester, and have co-authored the book Carnival Kingdom, on which this lecture is based. Carnival Kingdom features the work of twelve scholars, theologians, and social activists from around the world, all calling for justice and a renewed society.

JustShare is a coalition of churches and charities and has aspired to engage with the City of London on issues of economic injustice, global development, and ethics since 2000. Their free monthly events discuss a range on topics from tax justice to economic growth, and human trafficking, and feature well-known speakers and collaborators such as Christian Aid, St Paul’s Institute and the ECCR. Their Christian Social/Political Thought lectures were initiated in 2009 by the late Labour MP Tony Benn and throughout the years have sought to deepen understandings of ethical issues through a Christian ethical framework.

JustShare are founding members of the City of London Fairtrade Group, and serve Fairtrade refreshments during networking after their events.
