Lecture to highlight the injustices and lessons of World War I
City of London based group JustShare will host a lecture by academic and activist Dr Neil Faulkner, research fellow of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Bristol.
Dr Faulkner will be speaking on his popular and challenging pamphlet, âNo Glory: the real history of the First World War,â in which he analyses the war, charts the resistance, and discusses the lessons for today.
Says Dr Faulkner, âThe First World War was a war for empire and profit; it involved four years of industrialised carnage. It represented a world gone mad. Because of this, it was bitterly and increasingly contested by its victims, the ordinary people of Europe and the subject-peoples of the European colonial empires. In becoming the leaders of protest, minorities of pacifist, socialists and anti-imperialists shook to its foundations the dysfunctional world order responsible for the war itself.â
JustShare is a coalition of churches and development agencies seeking to engage the City of London in issues of social justice. This special event has been organised in observation of the centenary of the start of World War I, to highlight just war theory and the important role WWI history plays in modern conflicts. The floor will open to audience questions at the end of the lecture.
