An Inaugural Lecture by Alan Durant, Professor of Communication in the Department of Law and Politics
In this lecture Alan Durant describes various specialized kinds of language use in law, and assesses their functioning, importance and associated challenges. Among the topics considered are: the historical development of 'legal English' and its increased co-existence with 'plain language' alternatives; approaches to meaning developed in statutory interpretation; and how legal measures regulate a profusion of different styles of language use in media content and on the internet in the face of conflicting attitudes towards such varying uses, including as regards what they mean.
