As part of British Science Week, join a panel of experts and opinion-formers to discuss one of the biggest threats to society - antibiotic resistance.
Modern medicine relies on antibiotics, which have saved countless lives and helped to extend the average lifespan by 20 years, but the infectious organisms they are designed to treat are developing resistance to them.
As the drugs we have lose their effect, and less money is going into research to find new ones, experts, including the World Health Organisation have said that without immediate action, weâre heading for a âpost-antibioticâ era. The problem of resistance has been described as a âcatastrophic threatâ by Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer for England, and governments across the world agree we need immediate, global action.
So, what would post-antibiotic London look like? And how do we avoid one of the biggest threats of our time?
Confirmed speakers include:
Dr Jenny Rohn, Microbiologist, UCL
James Anderson, Head of Corporate Government Affairs, GlaxoSmithKline
Rosamund Urwin, Columnist, Evening Standard
