The growth of London in recent centuries entailed the swallowing up of small villages deep in the countryside.
This course will examine what have now become extensive London boroughs. Each which will be described in lectures followed by walks through these historic areas and each should be treated as an integrated pair of topics.
Walk through Chelsea
We will visit this area first, followed by a lecture next week. The main part of the morning will be a visit to Wren's Royal Army Hospital, the residence of the Chelsea Pensioners. From there we will make our way to the river and follow the fascinating Cheyne Walk with its superb 18th and 19th century houses, and end up in the heart of the village, where we will see the tomb of Sir Thomas More in Chelsea Old Church.
