Volcanoes and us

Professor Stephen Sparks FRS CBE in conversation with Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE.

Join Steve Sparks as he discusses his fascinating career studying volcanoes, one of the most dynamic phenomena on earth.
Explore how Steve’s work has contributed to our understanding of volcanoes and discover why curiosity-driven research is so important to society.

Steve has been involved in disaster response in Montserrat, aviation emergencies over Iceland, radioactive waste in Japan and mining for copper in the remnants of ancient volcanoes, and he continues to advise and instruct governments on disaster risk reduction.

In June 2015 Steve Sparks was presented with the2015 Vetlesen Prize, along with prize money of $250,000 for his pioneering work.
