An evening commemorating Britain's First World War conscientious objectors through drama, song and talks.
One hundred years after general military conscription became the law of the land, an evening that commemorates the courage of Britain's WW1 COs. THIS EVIL THING by Michael Mears is a dramatic overview of the COs' struggles against conscription, which will be performed in a semi-staged reading. Guest speakers include Cyril Pearce, compiler of the Pearce Register online archive of the 16,500+ British COs; Professor Lois S. Bibbings, (Bristol University), author of Telling Tales About Men; and Ben Copsey from the Peace Pledge Union. There will also be a display of Emily Johns' posters depicting anti-war themes.
