Butoh: transformation and the poetics of the image
Research seminar by Marie-Gabrielle Rotie (Goldsmiths College)
Marie-Gabrielle Rotie has studied Butoh since 1992. This, together with her original training in Fine Art informs her inimitable approach to choreography and teaching. This seminar, will offer an opportunity to explore the butoh paradigm from her personal perspective and through demonstration, video and discussion will explore ways of approaching use of space/time informed by Japanese Aesthetics, the meeting of inner and outer spaces, the poetics of the image and the creative potential and problematics in the meeting of contemporary dance and butoh.
brief biography
Marie-Gabrielle Rotie studied Fine Art and then dance specialising in Butoh. She has studied with over 30 teachers in Europe and Japan and in particular has collaborated with Ko Murobushi ( duet), Tetsuro Fukuhara (group) and Katsura Kan (duet.) She has created numerous touring works funded by ACE and has showed 8 productions at The Place Theatre since 2001. Her work has also showed at Royal Opera House and across UK and Europe. She has choreographed for commercial opera and theatre- notably for Peter Hall/ Bacchai at Royal National theatre. She is a visiting lecturer in Drama at Goldsmiths, UCL and has lectured on Japanese Art and Culture. She was a Place Prize semi-finalist 2004 and will premiere a new work at Laban in March 2005. She estalished butoh uk in 1997 and has organised over 40 workshops and 3 major butoh festivals, single-handedly putting Butoh on the Uk performance map!
