A Pilgrim's Progress

Medieval re-enactor Steven Payne describes how the archaeological record informed his remarkable pilgrimage to Canterbury, which he accomplished dressed and equipped like a man of the 14th century.

In 2015, retired physics teacher and medieval re-enactor Steven Payne became the first person in 700 years to complete a pilgrimage from Southampton to Canterbury just as Chaucer's contemporaries did, on foot, in authentic replicas of 14th-century clothing and equipment, some of which he will display during this lecture. The City of London Archaeological Society's monthly lectures are followed by light refreshments and an opportunity to socialise.
