Integrated education is under attack

A talk on the latest proposal by the government on allowing schools to select their pupils

Jay Harman is the Faith Schools and Education Campaigner at the British Humanist Association (BHA), leading the BHA’s work on all aspects of schools and curriculum policy, with a particular focus on Religious Education and religious selection in admissions. As such he is the only campaigner working full time in opposition to the state funding of ‘faith’ schools and against religious discrimination in admissions, employment, and the curriculum. In addition to his work with the BHA, he also sits on the steering groups of the Fair Admissions Campaign and the Accord Coalition for inclusive education.

The principle of integrated education is under attack like never before in this country following the Government’s recent announcement that it will introduce a new generation of state faith schools that can religiously discriminate against children in allocating all of their places. Speaking against the plan to remove the existing rule requiring new religious schools to keep at least half of their places open to local children regardless of religion or belief, BHA Faith Schools and Education Campaigner Jay Harman will explain how, in making the announcement, the Government has ignored the experts, misrepresented the evidence, bowed to the will of the religious lobby, and disregarded the rights and better interests not only of children and their parents, but of our society as a whole.

Doors open at 6.30 pm for talk at 7.00 p.m
