JAYNE PARKER - Reflections on filming performance | CROSSING BORDERS

“The challenge of filming expressive action and capturing its felt experience is compelling for me – as is the process of filmmaking, in particular framing and editing.” Jayne Parker

Reflections on filming performance

Much of Jayne’s film work features the performance of music in what she calls ‘a search to find a music equivalent within the language of film’. There is a strong element of performance in all her work - the body in action, in relation to an object, musical instrument, another body.

Jayne Parker is an artist and filmmaker whose work has been widely shown in major art institutions, on television and in film and music festivals. In 2003 she was the recipient of the 1871 Fellowship, researching the relationship between music and film, hosted by the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford and the San Francisco Art Institute. Much of her work features the performance of music. She is currently working on a new film, continuing her collaboration with cellist Anton Lukoszevieze, alongside a series of objects and photographs, which extend her interest in music.

Feeling what the performer feels – 9th – 11th December 2016
This workshop reflects on the felt experience of dance and movement on film. It invites a series of questions: Why do I want to film this? What do I want to feel when I see it on film? Can I find a way to express or capture on film the qualities of the performing body and the way it makes me feel? Can I put myself in the place of the performer and feel what they feel?

It will be a workshop of conversations and sharing experiences, examining and exploring the challenges of filming the performing body.

Friday 9th December, 6 – 9pm | Saturday 10th – Sunday 11th December, 11am – 5pm
