Egypt's Black Pharaohs

Dr Robert Morkot will talk about Beyond the Rivers of Kush: Discovering the Black Pharaohs

In the 9th Century BCE a powerful kingdom arose in northern Sudan (ancient Kush). Conquering Egypt, its black pharaohs ruled the Nile Valley as the 25th Dynasty for half a century from the Mediterranean as far south as Khartoum, until driven out by the Assyrians. Dr Morkot is Co-ordinator for Egyptology / Ancient History at the Centre for Research in Continuing Education at the University of Exeter. He is one of the co-authors of Centuries of Darkness, the controversial re-assessment of the chronology of the Late Bronze Age of the Near East, and has published the highly acclaimed book The Black Pharaohs: Egypt's Nubian Rulers, which provides the theme for his talk.
