Portrait Miniatures Study Day

Study day to complement the opening of the new Miniatures Gallery at the V&A.

The first portrait miniatures in England were paitned for HEnry VIII in the 1520s,but it was Nicholas Hilliard's miniatures of Henry's daughter Elizabeth and her glamorous courtiers and wealthy subjects that established this exquisite art as desirable and fashionalbe. These watercolour paintings hold a special place in British art. Hilliard once called them "a thing apart...which excelleth all other painting."
