The air battles of 1940 determined the fate of the two Western democracies and set the stage for the final outcome of the war.
Between 1918 and 1940, aircraft speeds and load carrying capabilities had tripled. There had been major advances in armament and radio communications and the use of radar had altered the conduct of the air war. The RAF, the Armee de l'Air and the Luftwaffe had modernised at different rates and according to different philosophies. Their success or lack of it determined the outcome of the war in the West.
