Alex Boyd launches his stunning new photography book St Kilda: The Silent Islands at Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow.
Alex Boyd launches his stunning new photography book St Kilda: The Silent Islands at Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow.
Landscape and documentary photographer Alex Boyd captures the reality of St Kilda in a series of stunning photographs. His focus encompasess not only the ruinous vestiges of the indigenous St Kildans, the last of whom where evacuated in the 1920s, but also the presence of the Ministry of Defence today and its impact on this fragile wilderness landscape.
Using a 'battered medium format camera' that once belonged to landscape photographer Fay Godwin, Boyd creates a documentary perspective that subverts the romantic visual clichés that cling to the remote archipelago. His haunting images of the military roads and installations bear out the complex relationship between the MoD and the National Trust in this UNESCO World Heritage site.
