Design for Knitting

The fourteenth annual knitting study day at the V&A organised by John Allen.


This is the fourteenth annual knitting study day at the V&A organised by the textile designer John Allen. The event is designed to encourage people to break boundaries and push the horizons of knitting to greater extremes.

Invited speakers this year are:

Ingrid Tait got her first commission from Liberty of London while studying for her BA in Textiles and another from Paul Smith after her MA graduation show. Since then, her Orkney-based company, Tait & Style, has worked for major designers such as Dior and Givenchy.

Juliana Sissons and Charlotte Pigg graduated from the BA in Knitted Textiles at the University of Brighton in 2004. Both set up businesses after graduating – Juliana specialising in complex delicate knits and Charlotte in a graphic style inspired by cartoons.

Dr Joan Farrer is Senior Research Tutor at the Royal College of Art and previously Central Saint Martins where she teaches emerging new talent. Joan is an expert in issues of sustainability in fashion and textiles and a design and strategy consultant for UK industrial fashion.

Clare Tough completed an MA in Fashion Knitwear from Central Saint Martins in 2004. Her graduation collection was bought by London boutique Browns and won acclaim at London Fashion Week 2004 . She has also worked as Design Assistant for knitwear designer Kay Cosserat.

Tickets: Full rate: £37, Concessionary rates: senior citizens, Friends and Patrons of the V&A: £31. students, Disabled people and ES40-holders: £11. Free places: a free place can be offered to a carer accompanying a registered disabled person. The study day ticket includes admission to the exhibition on 16 July, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
