Institute of Ideas and Pfizer Debating Matters Competition 2004/05 National Final

The National Final of the Debating Matters Competition brings together eight teams of sixth formers in a day-long knockout competition.

The Debating Matters Competition has established a new format for sixth form debating where intellectual substance and robust argument count for more than posturing and rhetorical point scoring. Student debaters will be put through their paces by panels of high-profile judges who will encourage them to develop and defend their arguments. Audience contributions are also encouraged and contribute to this engaging format for debate.

Topics for debate include terrorism and civil liberties, incitement to religious hatred, the influence of American culture, the repatriation of cultural artefacts and science and the precautionary principle.
