Charles Saumarez Smith: New vs Old at the National Gallery

An illustrated discussion of the complex architectural history of this fascinating public building.

Ever since it opened to Wilkins's designs in 1838, the architecture required to house the nation's most important public collection of art has continuously evolved due to the changing demands of both the collection and its public. In September, the latest stage of the building's development by Dixon Jones Architects will be unveiled, when the restored Portico entrance opens to the public following a year's closure. As the UK's most visited museum or gallery with nearly 5m visitors in 2004, debate continues about how space in the building can be best used in the future. Charles Saumarez Smith is Director of the National Gallery
